Bio

Anna Kaye was born in Detroit, Michigan and now lives in Denver where she works in her studio creating drawings and paintings that are inspired by the natural world. She earned her B.S. in geology and fine art at Skidmore College, NY. She continued her education at Yale in painting, drawing, printmaking and photography. She earned her M.F.A. at Washington University in St. Louis where she was awarded the Laura and William Jens Scholarship and a teaching on record position. Anna Kaye’s artwork is a part of international, private, public, corporate, and museum collections including Home & Garden Television’s Green Home. Interviews and reviews include Colorado Matters, Colorado Life Magazine, Westword, and the Denver Post. She is the founder of Pink Progression and organizes large-scale exhibitions that promote social action and connectivity. Kaye donates a percentage of all sales annually to environmental funds. She is a former Visiting Assistant Professor and Co-Coordinator of Drawing at Metropolitan State University. Anna Kaye currently teaches at the Denver Art Museum.

Statement

One spark ignites a massive blaze of crimson flames that destroy age-old ecosystems to bring new life. Fire is a natural part of the forest's vitality. It promotes species diversity, regeneration of seeds and plants, and prevents the spread of diseases. This phenomenon has shaped our landscapes since the appearance of terrestrial plants, over 400 million years ago. Our global climate is changing and with it, wildfires have increased in size and intensity making it harder for our ecosystems to recover.

Absorbing these impacted habitats over the years has embedded the following creative muses, conflict and survival, into my work. I grew up near Detroit, Michigan where vast urban decay was rampant from de-industrialization, crime, and other factors. This enhanced my sense of empathy, compassion, love for diversity and justice, and reverence for the natural world. Residing in Colorado for over a decade and observing its fire cycle directly, provides an abundance of impassioned visual stimulus for my creative practice.

With brittle, powdery tools and fragile paper surfaces, I draw scenes in which calamity has occurred, such as scorched forests, and when hope arises, as plants and animals re-inhabit the forest. With my drawings, I remember the forgotten and reveal the hidden. Perceiving life with heightened senses and empathy compels me to capture its inherent features, “imperfections,” and all. Every angle, tiny detail, value, or hue, are important parts of the whole.

On our 4.5 billion year-old revolving planet the only constant is change, at times accelerated by the species that inhabit it. With change comes loss and adaptation. My artwork documents this dichotomy, its ecological and social impact, offering a visual language to assist in coping with these transformations.
