Glycyrrhiza is a Greek word that means “sweet root.” This native Colorado plant has sweet roots that taste like sweet potato when roasted. It has medicinal properties and sticky seed pods with hooked spines. After a fire, American licorice will sprout from protective rhizomes, which are underground stems with roots. To create this charcoal drawing, I ignited a dried branch with seeds and watched the flame dance along the stem.
